Gas emergency

Smell Gas? Do This Now

Natural gas and LPG are given a strong rotten-egg odour so you notice a leak early. If you can smell gas or hear hissing near a meter or appliance, treat it as urgent and act before you call. A licensed gas plumber should always find and fix the source.

Leave the area and get everyone into fresh air.

Do not touch light switches, power points, flames or the stove.

Turn the gas off at the meter only if it is safe to reach.

Open doors and windows on your way out to ventilate.

Call Apex from outside on 1300 096 668 for emergency gas help.

Appliance installs

Gas Appliance Installation Price Ranges

Planning a kitchen, laundry or outdoor upgrade? Here is a plain guide to common gas appliance installs. Final pricing depends on the appliance, the existing gas point, and any new pipework, so we confirm a fixed quote before we start. Where a job needs a new run, see new gas line installation.

Coordinated with your renovation

Because Apex is a full plumbing service, gas work can be booked alongside kitchen, laundry, bathroom and hot water plumbing. One licensed team, one point of contact, and a gas cooktop installation or gas oven installation timed to land with the rest of the trades.

Advice on whether an appliance can be reused or should be replaced

Correct connector and hose fitted, not the old perished one

Combustion and leak testing before we hand it back

Compliance certificate issued for the completed work

Thinking of swapping an appliance yourself first? Read why that is risky in our guide to common gas appliance DIY mistakes, and when a gas connector should be replaced.

Compliance

Your NSW Gas Compliance Certificate Explained

Most gas work in NSW needs a gas compliance certificate NSW law recognises as proof the job was done and tested by a licensed gasfitter. Competitors rarely explain it, so here is the plain version. When Apex finishes your gas work, you get the certificate that keeps your gas supply legal and your warranty and insurance intact.

What a gas compliance certificate covers

A Certificate of Compliance confirms your gas installation meets AS/NZS 5601.1, the national gas installation standard. It is a licensed gasfitter declaring, in writing, that the work is safe and to code. A compliance plate is also fixed near the appliance or meter.

Standard

Work certified against AS/NZS 5601.1, the gas installation standard.

Timing

Issued within 5 business days of completing the work.

Lodgement

Submitted through the BCNSW eCert portal (this replaced MyInspections for gas from 1 March 2026).

Plate

A gas compliance plate is affixed at the installation, usually near the appliance or meter.

Who

Only a licensed gasfitter can carry out the work and issue the certificate.

Gas safety

Spotting an Unsafe Gas Appliance

A faulty gas appliance can leak gas or produce carbon monoxide, a gas you cannot see or smell. Knowing the early signs helps you act before it becomes dangerous. If you notice any of these, stop using the appliance and book a licensed gasfitter.

Uncertain whether your appliances are running correctly? Our guide on safer alternatives to DIY gas work explains what to check and what to leave to the pros.

A yellow or orange flame where it should burn steady blue

Soot, staining or scorch marks around a burner or heater

A persistent gas smell, hissing, or a pilot that will not stay lit

Excess condensation or a stuffy, headachy feeling when the appliance runs

A carbon monoxide alarm activating near a gas appliance

Gas Plumbing FAQs

Can I disconnect my own gas stove in NSW?

In NSW, gas work including disconnecting and reconnecting appliances must be done by a licensed gasfitter, and doing it yourself can leave gas escaping and void your insurance. If you are moving a stove, the safest path is a licensed gas plumber who caps the line and tests it. We cover the detail, and the risks, in our guide on how to safely disconnect gas appliances.

How much does a gas compliance certificate cost in NSW?

There is usually no separate charge for the certificate itself. A gas compliance certificate is issued by the licensed gasfitter as part of completing compliant gas work, so the cost sits inside the quote for the job rather than as an add-on. When Apex quotes your gas work, we make it clear that the certificate for the completed work is included, with no surprise line item at the end.

How do you detect a gas leak?

Our gas leak detection starts by isolating the section in question, then pressure testing the line to confirm whether it holds. We check joints, connectors and appliances, use leak-detection methods on accessible fittings, and trace the source rather than guessing. Once found, we make the area safe and carry out the gas leak repair, then re-test to confirm the line is sealed before it goes back into service.

Do I need a gas compliance certificate?

For most gas installations, alterations and new connections in NSW, yes. The certificate confirms the work meets AS/NZS 5601.1 and must be issued within 5 business days and lodged through the BCNSW eCert portal. Some maintenance on an unmodified appliance may not need a new certificate. Apex handles the certification for you as part of the job.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the area and get into fresh air, avoid switches, flames and the stove, turn the gas off at the meter only if it is safe to reach, ventilate on your way out, and call us from outside on 1300 096 668. Never test for a gas leak with a flame, and never keep using an appliance you suspect is leaking. A licensed gas plumber should find and fix the source.

How much does gas appliance installation cost?

It depends on the appliance and whether there is an existing gas point or new pipework is needed. A straight swap to an existing point costs less than a gas oven installation or gas cooktop installation that needs a new line. Apex assesses the site, then gives you a fixed quote to approve before we start, so there is no surprise on the bill.

Are your Sydney gas plumbers licensed?

Yes. Apex works under NSW Licence 306733C, covering plumbing and gasfitting, with more than 26 years of experience. Only licensed gasfitters are legally permitted to install, alter or repair gas in NSW, and you can verify our licence with NSW Government before any work begins.

Do you handle emergency gas work?

Yes. For a suspected gas leak or an appliance that is not safe, follow the steps above, get out, and call us. Our emergency plumber team covers urgent gas callouts across Sydney, so a licensed gasfitter can make the situation safe.
